Project Description
To marry art and 3G cell phone technology in the name of L.O.V.E.

Overview of the Project
The 3G apps designed for new smart phone technology can be used in countless positive applications including: monitoring blood glucose levels; documenting events with cell cameras and videocams; using GPS for organizing; scanning product barcodes to help choose healthier foods etc.

Why Love? Between 24/7 cable news and social media, public discourse skews far too often towards the negative. And, there is always the concern over new technology being used as a tool of "Big Brother" or employed in other ways that harm society. As a counterbalance, I would like to take 3G technology and show how it can be used to make life easier, healthier and more interesting. Apps can aid us in learning new languages, writing a paper, or guiding us home when we are lost. The practical possibilities can be combined in visually engaging ways – through art – that enhance an apps original purpose.

To engage specific communities, I would like to present this project in art galleries, museums, community centers and other venues where this work can be viewed and discussed.

The individual pieces I have created to date include 2D digital wall pieces, audio, video and virtual 3D works. Examples include: a video using cellphone filters, a large barcode wall piece with a message that can be read by free smart phone scanners, and a 3D virtual reality sculpture that can only be viewed with a smart camera and free app.

As part of the exhibition, I will encourage the public to participate by working with me in the creation of new pieces that will be shown in the space, and also posted on this blog. One example is to work with visitors to create barcodes with their personal messages embedded in the code. These pieces will be printed and displayed in a grid on the wall, and serve as a high tech community message board.

I will also schedule talks and demonstrations on the different technologies I am using as a jumping-off point for discussions on the social and political ramifications that go along with GPS tracking, virtual imaging, social media, citizen documentation, etc.

Estimated Costs
$280 to facilitate one virtual reality sculpture (build 3D model, light, place, test)
$575 transportation/deliver
$732 printing costs
$450 miscellaneous mounting, paper, hardware, office supplies, etc.

Artist Statement
Experimentation is key to my practice. New directions in my work come from observation of the world around me, both the macro and micro. Reading, research and the use of new materials and methods usually follow. A common subject of my work has been the place where nature and humankind intersect. For my work to be successful it must be unique and be a trigger for questions and further thought.

Biography
After living and working in San Francisco for 14 years as a designer for publications like The Bay Guardian and Metro Magazine, Vincent moved to New York City where he concentrated his studies on painting at the School of Visual Arts and the New York Academy. He has exhibited his artwork nationally and internationally including: the Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Roger Smith Gallery, NYC; Butters Gallery Ltd., Portland OR; Art Basil Miami; and the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

In 2008, Sage Projects was founded by Vincent and in early 2009 the group opened a co-op space operated by its members. The space was a repurposed retail store that was on loan for an eight month period during which time over 200 under-recognized artists were given an opportunity to exhibit their work.

Over the past several years Vincent has documented the work of over 50 other artists and art organizations through a series of videos that he shot and presented via the web, cable TV and at screenings. He also maintains a blog featuring art events and exhibitions. romanblog2.blogspot.com

Vincent has been the recipient of honors from Chashama (residency) NYC, The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, The State Museum of Harrisburg, The Wood Turning Center (2 residencies) Philadelphia, PA and others. His work is in private collections around the world as well as public and corporate collections that include: Coventry Corporation, Fort Washington, PA; The Park Hyatt at The Bellevue in Philadelphia, PA; Morgan Lewis, Philadelphia, PA.
